DX NEWS

APRIL 2017
9M0    – Originally  announced  for  December, the  9M0W DXpedition  to  the
         Spratly  Islands [425DXN 1345] has  been  postponed to  10-20 March
         next year, owing to  the  unavailability of the  resort  on  Layang
         Layang. Plans are for Hrane, YT1AD and a  large group to be QRV  on
         160-6 metres CW, SSB and  digital modes.  The team has  two  vacant

9U     – Antonio IZ8CCW, Gabriele I2VGW and a large  multi-national  team of
         Mediterraneo  DX  Club’s  members  will  be active  as  9U4M   from
         Bujumbura, Burundi on 6-17 November. They will operate on all bands
         and modes with five stations.  More information  is expected in due

A4     – A41MS, A41OF, A41RN and A41ZZ will be active as A41ZZ/p from Suwadi
         Island (AS-112) on 14-15 April. QSL via A41ZZ. [TNX rsgbiota.org]
D4     – Tony, CT1FFU will be active as  D4T from Ilha do Sal (AF-086), Cape
         Verde on 18-25 April. He will operate CW, SSB and  digital modes on
         the  HF bands, 6m and 4m.  QSL via CT1FFU,  direct or  bureau,  and

E3     – Zorro, JH1AJT will  visit  Eritrea again  on 19-29 May.  He will be
         joined by Franz DJ9ZB, Champ E21EIC and  Dima RA9USU, with  planned
         activity as E31AA on 160-10 metres CW, SSB, RTTY. Zorro also  plans
         to be QRV as E39DI from the Dahlak Archipelago (AF-038)  “for a few
         days” and with a focus on the low bands.  This IOTA group was  last

EW     – Special callsign EV145O will be active  from the  city of  Rechytsa
         from 24 April to 22 June  to  mark  the  145th anniversary  of  the
         creation of the Water Rescue Society in Belarus. QSL via the bureau

F      – Andy F4ELK, Christophe F4ELI and  Stephane F5UOW will  operate  SSB
         and CW as TM65EU from  IOTA group  EU-065  on 28-29 April.  Islands
         mentioned  are  Quemenes (aka Kemenez, DIFM AT-039),  Balanec (DIFM
         AT-038),  Trilien (DIFM AT-040),  Ledenes  de  Molene (aka  Ledenez
         Vraz, DIFM AT 042)  and  Ledenes de Quemenes (aka  Ledenez Kemenez,

GM     – Ian, G8ZLL will be active from the Scottish island of  Islay, Inner
         Hebrides (EU-008) on 22-28 April. He will operate  mainly CW on 80,
         40 and 20 metres.
GM     – John, 2E0GUA will operate holiday style as 2M0GUA from the Isle  of
         Mull (EU-008) from 22 April to 2 May. He hopes to be active “on HF,
         2m & 70cm from  various  locations”.  QSL via home call  (direct or

HB9    – Special callsign  HB600NVF will  be  active  until  31 December  to
         commemorate the 600th anniversary of the birth of Niklaus von Flue,
         the patron saint of  Switzerland.  QSL via LoTW (preferred);  paper

I      – ARI Torino will be active  as  IQ1TO  from  the  submarine  ‘Andrea
         Provana’ on  22-23 April.  Launched in 1918, she was decommissioned
         in 1928, and her central section with the  conning tower  has  been
         located in Torino, on the bank of the river Po, since then. QSL via

J5     – The Italian DXpedition Team will  be  active as  J5T  from  Bubaque
         Island (AF-020), Guinea-Bissau  in  mid-November (eaxct dates TBA).
         Eight  operators (I1HJT,  I2YSB, IK2CIO,  IK2CKR,  IK2DIA,  IK2HKT,
         IK2RZP and JA3USA) will be QRV  on  160-10 metres  CW and SSB  with
         four stations; RTTY will be used on one band only, to  be  selected
         depending on propagation. QSL via I2YSB and LoTW 6 months after the

JA     – Look for JA4GXS to be active as JA4GXS/5 from  Naka Island (AS-200)
         on 23-24 April.  He will operate  CW and SSB  on  40, 30, 20 and 17

JA     – Take, JI3DST will be  active  as  either  JS6RRR and JI3DST/6  from
         Miyako Island (AS-079) from  26 April to 9 May.  He will be QRV  on
         80-6 metres SSB, CW, RTTY, JT65 and FM.  QSL via bureau (preferred)

OE     – Special station OE17ATOM will be active  from  the power  plant  in
         Zwentendorf (“the world’s only  nuclear power  plant  to  have been
         completed but never put  into operation”) on  21-22 April.  QSL via
         bureau.
SM     – Special callsign SC90SM will  be active  until 31 December to  mark
         the 90th  anniversary  of  the  longwave  broadcasting  station  in
         Motala. Inaugurated in 1927 and  closed in 1962, it was one  of the
         most powerful BC stations in Europe.  QSL via bureau,  or direct to
         SM5ELV.
TG     – Dwight, VE7BV  and  Doug, VE7VZ  will  be  active  as  TG9BBV   and
         TG9/VE7VZ from Guatemala from 21 April to 15 May.  They might  also
         operate a few  days  from  HR5.  QSL for all operations  via  VE7BV

UA     – Special stations R1961GP and R1961AG are active  until 30 April  to
         commemorate the first manned space flight made on  12 April 1961 by

UA     – Special callsign RA36GS will be active from  23 April to 22 May  to
         commemorate the 140th anniversary of  the birth  of  Russian Arctic
         explorer Georgy Y. Sedov (1877-1914).  IOTA enthusiasts might  note
         that the Sedova Archipelago, part of Severnaya Zemlya (AS-042), has
         been named after him. QSL via RN3FY.
V4     – Alex, W1CDC will be active holiday style as V4/W1CDC from St. Kitts
         (NA-104) from 24 April to 7 May. He will operate mainly CW. QSL via

V5     – Stefan, HB9JAB will be active as V51/HB9JAB while  touring  Namibia
         on a campervan between  18 April and 8 May.  QSL via eQSL and LoTW.

W      – Nelson, NE4LS (CW QRP) and John, KE4IDW (SSB with 20 watts) will be
         active as  N4T  from  Garden Key,  Dry Tortugas (NA-079)  on  21-24

XV     – Jesus, JP7MBO (WP4JBG) will  be  active  as  XV9G from  Ho Chi Minh
         City, Vietnam between 19 April and 9 May. He will operate mainly CW
         with some SSB on 40, 20 and 15 metres.
 
JANUARY 2017
5N     – Tom, PA3TG  will  be  active  as  A65TG  from Sharjah,  United Arab
         Emirates  on  2-5 January.  Then  he  expects  to return  to Lagos,
         Nigeria and operate SSB and CW as 5N40TG. QSLs via PA3TG, direct or

6W     – Michel, F6AFH will be active again as 6W7SS from La Somone, Senegal

9A     – Both Josip, 9A5AX and Tom, 9A2AA begun their  adventure in  amateur
         radio sixty years ago, in 1957. Look for them to be signing  9A57AX
         and 9A1957AA  from 1 January until  31 December to celebrate  their

9G     – Bob 5B4AGN, Steve G3VMW, Alan G3XAQ, Fred G4BWP, Neil G6MC and Iain
         M0PCB will be active  as 9G5X from  Ghana on 7-21 March.  They will
         operate CW, SSB and RTTY on 160-10 metres with three stations.  QSL
         via M0OXO’s  OQRS (direct or bureau) and  LoTW (logs to be uploaded
         during the expedition on a daily basis);  traditional  cards should
         go direct only to M0OXO. Logsearch on  Club Log (hopefully  updated
         at  least  twice a day),  where the  Leaderboard  function will  be

E5     – Erik, K7ADD has extended  his  trip  to  the  Cook Islands  [425DXN
         1326], and E51AMF will now be active also from  Rarotonga (OC-013),
         South Cooks on 5-9 January  and  again  on  8-18 February.  From 11
         January to 6 February  activity  will  be  from  Manihiki (OC-014),
         North Cooks. He will operate SSB a nd  RTTY on  80-10 metres (“160m

F      – The  Association  Mosellane  des Radio Amateurs  will be active  as
         TM57H, TM57A, TM57N and TM57D on 15-29 January  for the  25th World
         Men’s Handball Championship that  will be  held in France.  QSL via

GM     – GB2KW will be active from near Inverness, Scotland between 1 and 28
         January, using a  variety of  different  vintage  transceivers  and
         Transmitters  manufactured by  KW Electronics Ltd during the  1960s
         and 1970s.  Activity will  be mainly on  80, 40 and 20  SSB and CW,
         with  some  AM operation  and some  160m  operation  possible.  See

HA     – The MTTOSZ Gyor Varosi Radioklub will use special callsign HG17EYOF
         until 31 August to celebrate the European Youth Olympic Festival (a
         biennial multi-sport event for youth  athletes  from the 48  member
         countries of the association of European Olympic Committees)  which

HK     – Liga Radio Manizales (HK6RM) will be active as 5K6RM on 1-9 January
         for the annual Manizales Fair. Activity will be on  80, 40, 30, 20,
         15, 10, 6 and 2 metres using SSB, CW, RTTY and SSTV.  QSL direct or

HR     – Gerard, F2JD will be active again as HR5/F2JD from  Copan, Honduras
         from 27 January to 24 April.  He will operate CW, SSB and digimodes

I      – Once again the Extreme DX & Contest Group will use special callsign
         II3CV on 11-28 February  to celebrate  the Carnival of Venice.  QSL

JW     – Erik, LA2US has been back to  Hopen Island (EU-063), Svalbard since
         early December and will remain  there for six months.  In his spare
         time he operates CW as JW2US around the IOTA frequencies  or on the

         bureau request service will be open  while  Erik is on  the island,
         the direct request service will be available  when he returns  home
         in June).
LZ     – Once again Radio Club Blagovestnik (LZ1KCP) will use twelve special
         callsigns  throughout 2017  to honour  as many different  Bulgarian
         saints: LZ552SGO (January),  LZ235SIR (February),  LZ303MA (March),
         LZ303SA (April),  LZ395SG (May),  LZ121SBS (June), LZ284SKD (July),
         LZ55UPB (August), LZ100SK (September), LZ251MKP (October),  LZ307MU

OH     – OH100FIN is the special callsign for club station OH2AP members  to
         use  during 2017  to celebrate  Finland’s  100th anniversary as  an
         independent state. All QSOs will be confirmed via the bureau.
OZ     – Special callsigns OZ90EDR, 5P90EDR and OX90EDR (from Greenland)will
         be in use on 11 February-15 May and again on  15 August-15 November
         (and maybe also at other times  during 2017) to celebrate  the 90th
         anniversary of the Danish  IARU  society, Eksperimenterende  Danske
         Radioamatorer (EDR). Joining the celebrations during the year  will
         also be  OV90EDR  and  OZ7D (on JT modes only).  All QSOs  will  be

         Micronesia between 4 and 22 January. They will operate CW, SSB  and

VE     – XK150YUKON is a special callsign for the  Yukon CanAm Contest  Club
         (VY1AAA)   to  celebrate   the   150th  anniversary   of   Canada’s
         Confederation from 1 January to 1 March. QSL via KC1CWF or LoTW.
VK     – Previously  announced  for  1-5 November [425DXN 1333], the VK5CE/8
         DXpedition to North Island (OC-198) has been brought forward to 12-
         16 October to fit in with the  scheduling and  availability of  the

XE     – Radio Club Queretaro (XE1RCQ) will be active as 6E0C from 1 January
         to  30  April  to  commemorate   the   100th  anniversary  of   the
         Constitution  of  Mexico,  drafted in Santiago de Queretaro  by the
         Constitutional Congress and promulgated on 5 February 1917. QSL via
         Club Log’s OQRS, or via XE1EE (direct or bureau).
YB     – Leo, YC9MLL will be active  from  Flores Island (OC-151)  on 21, 22
         and 24 January, and again for a few days around 11-12  and/or 21-24
         July. He will  operate mainly  SSB on 15 metres, but  he might also

YJ     – YJ0AA (home call JH2BNL), YJ0FM (home call JI2UAY) and  YJ0WW (home
         call JA2NQG) will be active from  Efate (OC-035), Vanuatu  on 20-23
         January.  They will operate  CW, SSB, RTTY and FM on  160-10 metres

ZF     – Pete, K8PGJ will be active again as ZF2PG from  the Cayman  Islands
         (NA-016) on  14-22 January.  He will be QRV  on 160-10 metres  SSB,
         with holiday style activity except  during the  North American  QSO
         Party  (from 18 UTC on  21 January to  6 UTC on the 22nd).  QSL via
         LoTW or direct to home call.
ZF     – Also QRV from the Cayman Islands  will be  Stan, K5GO, who  will be
         active again as  ZF9CW from  22 January to  23  February.  He  will
         participate in the  CQ WW 160-Meter CW Contest (27-29 January)  and
         the  ARRL DX CW Contest  (18-19 February, low power).  Outside  the
